Investing in megatrends means preparing an investment strategy based on the major drivers of change in economies and societies. Claudia Collu, Head of Global Equity at ANIMA Sgr, spoke about this during an interview with Financialounge's 'StayLive' programme.

Investing in megatrends

It is worth premising at the outset that planning a long-term strategy is a delicate operation in its own way and one that involves risks: one of these is having to wait a certain amount of time to understand whether the investment made is capable of bearing the fruit it promised or not. Having said this important premise, however, it can also be said that megatrends have the advantage of representing an area of investment that looks to the future on the basis of structural phenomena judged to be enduring and promising. Collu explains that investments in megatrends can also act as cross-sectional investments: it is possible to bet on the different planes into which a megatrend is articulated, as well as on a series of megatrends and areas that represent points of contact between them.

The artificial intelligence megatrend

The first of these structural phenomena that ANIMA Sgr's Global Equity Manager mentions is that of artificial intelligence, in particular generative AI: this technological innovation brings with it what could be defined as a productive ecosystem; Collu speaks, for example, of microprocessors and cloud services, programme providers and cybersecurity systems, but also of the incorporation of technology within the devices themselves.

Energy transition and innovation in healthcare

There are two other major megatrends that Collu talks about. The first concerns energy transition, which, she explains, enjoys the support of many national and supranational governments (which are contributing to its acceleration). The second megatrend concerns the health sector, namely cancer vaccines: these are therapies that aim to stimulate the body to react against cancer cells; Collu believes that these treatments not only represent hope for many patients, but are also set to revolutionise the medical sector.
